Findings from a Japanese Study Link Men's Sexual Interest to the Risk of Early Death

A recently released study suggests that men living in Japan may be more likely to die early if they lack sexual attraction.

Researchers will need to sift through the data to determine the precise association between mortality and libido, but they hypothesize that a decreased sex drive may be a more obvious symptom of more subtle underlying health problems.

In Yamagata Prefecture, a mountainous region of Japan known for its hot springs, temples, and natural beauty, the data came from 20,969 adults (8,558 men and 12,411 women) aged 40 or older who underwent yearly health examinations for six years.

Researchers from Yamagata University examined the respondents' self-reported levels of sexual attraction in an initial questionnaire and in a subsequent survey carried out years later. 503 of the initial 20,969 patients had died by that point.

Researchers discovered that males who reported a lack of sexual interest had much higher rates of cancer death and overall mortality.

Even after adjusting for age, hypertension, diabetes, smoking, alcohol use, BMI, education, marital status, frequency of laughter, and psychological distress, this connection persisted.

The researchers note that whereas sexual activity and sexual satisfaction are thought to be beneficial to older populations' psychological health and welfare, the relationship between sexual desire and longevity has not been studied.

This study is the first to prospectively look at links between sexual interest and cardiovascular, cancer, and all-cause death in a population located in a community.

However, it did not discover a significant correlation between lower libido and mortality in women as it had in men. The study found that women were more likely to report a lack of sexual interest than men were - 16 percent of female participants in their sample did so, compared with 8 percent of male volunteers.

There is no way to determine which element, if any, is the cause and which is the consequence because this study is simply observational.

Scientists speculate that men's lack of sexual attraction may be related to "unhealthy lives."

They add that the lack of interest "may alter a spectrum of inflammatory, neuroendocrine, and immunological responses" if we think that sexual attraction is tied to favorable psychological characteristics.

Even though the further investigation will be required to fully comprehend what is taking place, the researchers note that simply identifying a potential connection like this is a crucial first step.

There are some significant limitations to the study that should be noted. One item on the first baseline questionnaire—"At this time, do you have any interest in people of the other sex?"—was used to assess a person's lack of sexual attraction.

Even if everyone is aware of what that question is asking, the researchers admit that it excludes those who are attracted to others of the same sex.

"Any respondent who chose "no" was deemed to be sexually inactive. Therefore, in this study, sexual attraction in a person of the same sex would be deemed to be "lacking sexual interest." "They compose.

The restricted question employed in this study makes it reasonable to mistrust at least some of the data the researchers estimate their sample may have comprised 200 LGBTQ persons. The authors of the study urge future studies to take this into consideration.

Additionally, because it wasn't covered in the baseline survey, the new study didn't account for several "medically significant aspects known to affect sexual function and longevity," such as the individuals' neurological problems or drugs they were taking, according to the authors.

However, continuing a sexual attraction might actually improve longevity. Despite the study's shortcomings, the researchers say that older populations in Japan should be made more aware of sexual interest as a determinant of public health.

"The Canadian government has started to support sexual activity as a component of an "aging well" strategy through public health promotion materials. Compared to the West, Japan has higher anti-sex prejudice among the elderly "The authors of the study wrote.

We are optimistic that promoting sexuality in Japan would improve public health.

The study was released in the PLOS One publication.
